The Dog with the Wonky Smile: How Woody’s “Goofy” Face Found a Forever Home

The world often looks away from things that aren’t “perfect.” But sometimes, it is the imperfections that hold the most beauty.

When Courtney Bellew first laid eyes on Woody, her heart didn’t just break—it melted. Woody was a Pitbull puppy with a face unlike any other. His muzzle was crooked, his smile was wonky, and his features were twisted into a permanent, adorable “derp” expression.

Woody wasn’t born this way. When he was just five weeks old, he was attacked by another dog. His owners at the time made a choice that would haunt his childhood: they never took him to the vet. His face healed as best as it could on its own, leaving him with a silhouette that made people stop and stare.

Chained and Forgotten

Neglecting Woody’s medical needs was only the beginning of his owners’ betrayal. A few months later, when the family moved out of their Tennessee home, they didn’t pack Woody. Instead, they left him chained up outside an empty house.

For six long weeks, Woody lived at the end of that chain. He survived only because kind neighbors noticed the lonely pup and made sure he had food and water. He was a “first” for Courtney, the director of Special Needs Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation (SNARR). She had seen many medical cases, but she had never seen a face quite like Woody’s.

Despite the abandonment and the pain of his past, Woody remained a “spaz”—a big, goofy puppy who didn’t know he was supposed to be sad.

A Shadow for the Sick

When Woody arrived in New York City, he was an eight-month-old dog acting like an eight-week-old puppy. He didn’t have manners; he jumped on people and chased cats, having never been taught how to be a “house pet.”

But the moment he entered his foster home with Jamie Bond, the “love bug” inside him took over.

On his very first day with Jamie, she fell ill with a fever. Woody, who had been a stray just days before, sensed something was wrong. He never left her side. He spent the entire afternoon snuggled on the couch, resting his crooked face on her chest. He became her shadow, following her from room to room to make sure his new favorite human was safe.

The Best Christmas Gift of All

As the holiday season approached, a miracle happened. Woody didn’t have to wait for a family to find him—he had already found them. Jamie, who had intended only to foster him, realized that life without Woody’s wonky smile wouldn’t be the same.

Just in time for Christmas, Woody found his “forever home.”

For the first time in his life, Woody won’t be spending the winter at the end of a cold chain. He will be inside, curled up on a soft bed, surrounded by toys and a family that sees his crooked face as the most beautiful thing in the world.

Woody’s journey reminds us that:

✨ Resilience is the ability to keep wagging your tail after the world tries to break you.

✨ “Ugly” is a word used by those who don’t know how to look with their hearts.

✨ A dog doesn’t need a perfect face to give perfect love.

Woody may look a little different, but he doesn’t think he’s any different from the other pups. He is just a goofy, affectionate boy who proved that even the most “broken” beginnings can lead to a picture-perfect ending.
