Sometimes, the most beautiful things in life aren’t symmetrical. For Alan, a Saluki-Boxer cross, a “wonky” face isn’t a disability—it’s his trademark, a permanent, goofy grin that has turned a once-abandoned stray into a global social media sensation.
Alan was born with a severe facial deformity that causes his nose to twist and droop sharply to the right, leaving his bottom teeth permanently exposed. While some might see a “broken” dog, his family sees a masterpiece of resilience.

A Chance Encounter at a Construction Site
Alan’s journey began in Doha, Qatar. Johanna Handley was on her way home from work when she spotted a pack of strays near a construction site. While many people might have driven past, Johanna noticed collars but no owners—a classic sign of abandonment.
She discovered a mother, a father, and a litter of puppies being quietly cared for by a kind security guard who was sharing his own meager meals with them. Johanna couldn’t walk away. She stepped in to help, eventually finding homes for the entire pack across Qatar and the U.S. But when she saw Alan’s gorgeous, lopsided face, she knew she had found her own dog.

Living Life “Sideways”
Living with a twisted jaw and nose comes with its own set of quirks. Alan has adjusted beautifully, but he does have to eat his food sideways, and drinking water is a messy affair—more ends up on the floor than in his mouth.
However, despite his appearance, Alan is perfectly healthy.
- He breathes easily: The deformity doesn’t obstruct his airways.
- He sleeps soundly: His “wonky” face doesn’t affect his rest.
- He manages everything: From playing to eating, Alan has adapted to his body with remarkable ease.

Surgery? Not on My Watch
Since Alan shot to fame on TikTok, racking up nearly 200,000 followers, Johanna has been flooded with comments. While most are adoring, some have offered money to “fix” his face through surgery.
Johanna’s response is a firm no. After a veterinary evaluation, it was determined that to “fix” Alan, doctors would have to break and reset his nose and jaw. “It would be unimaginable pain for something that is purely cosmetic,” Johanna explained during an appearance on This Morning. “There’s no point putting him through that. Alan isn’t ugly at all.”
The “Thief” Who Stole Lexi’s Heart
At home, Alan is far from a delicate patient; he is a whirlwind of energy and a bit of a “thief.” He is notorious for stealing food—whether it’s off a plate or straight out of his human sister’s mouth.
He also brought a miracle to his older canine sibling, Lexi. Before Alan arrived, Lexi was a “grumpy old dog.” Alan’s infectious joy and relentless playfulness turned Lexi into a puppy again. Today, the two are inseparable, spending their days playfully mauling each other in the backyard.

A Message for Rescue Lovers Everywhere
Alan’s fame isn’t just about cute videos; it’s about advocacy. Johanna hopes that by sharing Alan’s life, more people will be encouraged to adopt rescue animals, especially those with physical differences.
His story reminds us:
- Differences aren’t defects: Alan’s “wonky” face is what makes him unique.
- Health is more than appearance: A happy dog doesn’t need to be “symmetrical” to have a high quality of life.
- Rescue dogs often give back more than they take: Alan didn’t just find a home; he gave Lexi her youth back.
Today, Alan lives a very normal, very happy puppy life. Whether he’s “stealing” snacks or being recognized on the street as the “TikTok dog,” he is living proof that beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder—and that a wonky smile can light up the entire world.
