She Has No Eyes, But Her Spirit Sees Everything: The Heart-Melting Journey of Puddin

Sometimes, love doesn’t need a pair of eyes to see a beautiful soul.

When Cory Gonzales first saw a picture of a tiny terrier mix online, he turned to his mother in excitement. “Oh my god, mom, look at this dog!” he exclaimed. His mother looked closer and gently reminded him, “You know that dog has no eyes, right?”

To Cory, it didn’t matter. He was captivated by her ears and a spirit that seemed to radiate through the screen. That dog was Puddin, and her journey from a dark, neglected past to becoming a social media “love muffin” is nothing short of miraculous.

A Legal Battle for a Tiny Life

Puddin’s story began with a tragedy that could have been prevented. When she was just a month old, a concerned community member noticed the puppy in a home in Texas, looking sickly and neglected. A severe eye infection had taken hold—likely from a scratch during play—but her owners had waited far too long to seek medical help.

When authorities arrived, the owners refused to hand her over. What followed was a drawn-out legal battle led by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Texas (SPCA). By the time the authorities finally won the case and rescued Puddin at six weeks old, the damage was irreversible. Her eyes were completely destroyed and causing her immense physical pain.

To save her life and end her suffering, the vet made the difficult decision to remove her eyes and sew her eye-sockets shut. Puddin spent nearly a month in recovery, learning to navigate a world of total darkness before she was finally put up for adoption.

Learning to Walk with Confidence

When Cory went to the SPCA to meet Puddin, the staff gave him one crucial piece of advice: “Don’t you treat her like a blind dog.”

Cory took those words to heart. After adopting her, he began a specialized training regimen to help her adjust. He didn’t see a “disabled” pet; he saw a spunky girl who just needed a different set of cues. They worked on “puppy school” basics with small modifications:

  • The “Step” Cue: Cory taught her “up” and “down” for stairs. Now, when they walk, you can see Puddin physically raising her paw higher in anticipation of an incline.
  • Confidence Games: They play hide-and-seek, where Puddin uses her powerful sense of smell to track Cory down, a game that builds her self-reliance.
  • Watch Out: A safety command used to guide her away from obstacles during their daily walks.

Despite her lack of sight, Puddin leads a high-quality life. She enjoys long naps, playing fetch (relying on the sound of the ball), and goes on trips to the dog park with her best friend, Murphy.

More Than Just a Rescue

Puddin didn’t just find a home; she found a purpose. Today, she is an Instagram sensation with over 150,000 followers who tune in to see her rocking sunglasses or snuggling with Cory.

But for Cory, Puddin is more than a viral star—she is his emotional anchor. As a graduate student, Cory found that Puddin’s dependency on him gave him a reason to get out of bed on his hardest days. “She’s depending on me,” he says. “She is like an emotional support dog for me.”

Puddin’s story is a powerful reminder to “adopt, not shop” and to never overlook a pet with special needs.

  • Dogs just want to be dogs: Whether they have three legs, no eyes, or are deaf, they just want a normal life of play and cuddles.
  • Resilience is beautiful: Puddin doesn’t know she’s “different”; she only knows she is loved.
  • Kindness is viral: The positivity Puddin spreads has created a global community of supporters.

Today, Puddin is the ultimate “love muffin,” proving that while her former owners took her sight, they could never take her vision of a happy life. Her house is a place of “positive vibes only,” where every wag of her tail is a victory over a dark past.
