In July 2015, a series of photographs from Ben Tre, Vietnam, sent shockwaves through the hearts of millions. They depicted a small, emaciated dog wandering a riverbank, searching through trash for food he couldn’t eat. His muzzle had been wound so tightly with black electrical tape that it had sliced deep into his flesh, causing horrific necrosis that exposed the white bone beneath.

He was a ghost walking among the living, a victim of a cruelty so silent and slow that it felt like a countdown to his final breath.

A Desperate Escape from the Slaughterhouse

The truth behind Lucky’s injury was as chilling as the wound itself. It was later discovered that Lucky had been sold to a local slaughterhouse. To prevent the dogs from screaming in their final moments, “executioners” would wrap their muzzles tightly with tape before the kill.

But Lucky was a warrior. Somewhere in that dark room, he found the strength to break free. For over a week, he wandered the streets of Ben Tre in agony. He could smell food in the trash, but he couldn’t open his mouth to taste it. He was starving and thirsty, his muzzle slowly rotting away, yet he refused to give up.

The Search That United a Nation

When photographer Dien Nguyen first spotted the dog, he knew he couldn’t save him alone. He shared the photos online, and within hours, the story went viral. A dedicated group of young rescuers from the “Gia Dinh Cua Be” (Baby’s Family) group in Ho Chi Minh City didn’t hesitate. They drove through the night, arriving in Ben Tre at 2:00 AM to begin the search.

When they finally caught him, the rescuers couldn’t hold back their tears. Lucky was weak, his breath smelled of infection, and the tape had sunk so deep into his face it was almost invisible beneath the swelling.

At the Saigon Pet veterinary clinic, doctors spent hours delicately removing the tape. When the last layer came off, revealing the bare bone of his snout, the room fell silent. Despite the unimaginable pain, Lucky lay perfectly still, as if he knew these hands were finally there to help, not to hurt.

A Journey Beyond Borders

Recovery was a long, uncertain road. Lucky’s story touched people far beyond Vietnam, drawing support from international advocates. He was cared for by A.R.C. Vietnam, where he was given the name “Lucky”—a testament to the miracle that he was still alive.

But his story didn’t end with a scar.

In late 2016, Lucky’s journey took an extraordinary turn. He was adopted by the German organization RespekTiere Leben. He traded the dusty riverbanks of Bến Tre for the green fields of Germany. The dog who once couldn’t open his mouth to eat was now enjoying a life of high-quality care, soft beds, and, most importantly, the unconditional love of people who saw him as a hero, not a victim.

A Legacy of Compassion

Lucky’s survival is more than just a success story for one dog; it is a powerful reminder of the resilience of the animal spirit and the impact of human empathy.

His journey from a slaughterhouse escapee to a beloved companion in Europe teaches us:
