Will There Be Justice for Justice? The Dog Bound by Electrical Tape Who Changed the Law

Some stories begin in such darkness that it’s hard to imagine they could ever find the light.

On a frigid December afternoon in 2015, near a tire shop in Windsor, Canada, a man named Dean Cresswell was walking his dogs when they led him toward a quiet patch of grass. What he found there was a scene of pure, calculated cruelty. Lying motionless was a small, 13-pound dog. His muzzle was wound so tightly with black electrical tape that he couldn’t whimper. His paws were bound together, and another loop of tape was cinched around his neck.

He was paralyzed, struggling for every breath, and slowly suffocating in the silence of the grass. Had Dean not followed his dogs at that exact moment, Justice would have been dead within hours.

A Body Broken, A Spirit Unbowed

When the rescuers from the Humane Society arrived, the sight was haunting. Even after the tape was painstakingly removed, the damage remained. Justice’s muzzle and paws were dangerously swollen, the skin raw and bleeding where the tape had bitten into his flesh.

But the physical wounds were only the beginning.

Medical examinations revealed that Justice was also battling heartworm and a severe dental condition. Every necessary surgery became a life-or-death gamble. Over the following weeks, Justice underwent four separate surgeries to remove dead tissue from his jaw and repair the extensive damage caused by the bindings. He was on heavy pain medication, his eyes often glazed with exhaustion, and for a long time, he couldn’t even stand on his own four feet.

Yet, amid the bandages and the IV drips, something miraculous happened. Justice began to wag his tail. He ate his meals with gusto. He looked at the veterinary staff not with fear, but with a profound determination to stay in this world.

The Fight for Accountability

As Justice healed, a different kind of battle began in the courtroom. The news of his abuse sparked a global outcry, with over 45,000 people signing a petition demanding the maximum penalty for his former owner.

In February 2016, the man responsible pled guilty. He was sentenced to two years in prison—one of the strongest sentences for animal cruelty at the time—and a 25-year ban on owning animals. The world sent a clear message: Justice’s life mattered. His suffering would not be ignored, and his name would forever be a symbol of accountability.

From Victim to Family Member

Recovery for Justice wasn’t just about healing his skin; it was about healing his mind. He carried the weight of his trauma through anxiety and hypervigilance. He needed a world that was predictable, quiet, and kind.

Through months of specialized clicker training and rehabilitation, Justice learned to trust again. In July 2016, he finally found the “forever” he had been waiting for. A family stepped forward who didn’t just see a “rescue dog” or a “victim,” but a companion.

In his new home, Justice’s life became beautifully ordinary. He spent his days cuddling on soft blankets, guarding his favorite toys, and—in a hilariously normal dog fashion—trying to steal sips of coffee when his owners weren’t looking. The dog who was once bound in silence had finally found his voice.

A Legacy of Love

In October 2021, at the age of 11, Justice peacefully crossed the Rainbow Bridge, surrounded by the people who loved him most. His journey from a discarded “object” in a field to a cherished family member stands as a powerful reminder:

  • Cruelty may have the first word, but love has the last. Justice’s life began in pain, but it ended in the warmth of a loving home.
  • Resilience is a quiet force. Justice didn’t need to bark to change the law; he just needed to survive.
  • One person can change everything. Because Dean chose to follow his dogs that day, a legacy of animal protection was born.

Rest in peace, sweet Justice. You were more than a survivor; you were a beacon of hope for every animal still waiting for their own justice.
