From the Brink of Septic Shock: The Resilient Spirit of Momma

In the abandoned houses and weed-choked lots of St. Louis, some dogs don’t just survive—they endure nightmares.

Randy Grim, founder of Stray Rescue of St. Louis, had been trying to rescue a dog named Momma since November. For months, she remained elusive, hiding in the shadows of North City. When they finally caught her, the sight was devastating. Momma was covered in puncture wounds, likely the result of being used as bait in dog fighting or living through brutal territory battles.

She was “leaking” infection from her wounds, her body struggling against septic shock. “She shouldn’t be alive,” Randy admitted. “She was literally hours from dying when we found her.”

The Price of a Second Chance

Saving Momma wasn’t just a matter of catching her; it was a high-stakes medical battle.

She was rushed into 24-hour intensive care (ICU) at Foster Creek. The cost of her first night alone was estimated at $2,700. To Randy, however, the price was secondary to the life at stake. Momma had lost a significant amount of weight and was severely traumatized, jumping in pain at the slightest touch and trembling with fear at the sight of other dogs.

Yet, despite her “stout” history of surviving on the streets, her sweetness remained. With the support of the medical team, the “tough little cookie” began to stabilize. She even found a “boyfriend” through the glass at the clinic—a dog that looked just like her—offering a glimmer of the social life she was meant to have.

Into the Urban Jungle: East St. Louis

After securing Momma, Randy and his team headed to East St. Louis—a place Randy describes as an “urban jungle” that society has totally forgotten. Here, the abandonment is rampant. Homes are left behind, and the dogs are often left chained to the ruins.

The team discovered two male dogs, chained apart and surrounded by trash. These dogs had been suffering from “fly spot” on their ears and were likely heartworm positive. “It happens a lot,” Randy explained. “People abandon their homes, and it’s the dogs that suffer in the end.”

The Complexity of Street Rescue

Not every rescue ends with a trip to the shelter. In one tense moment, while trying to trap a beautiful but terrified dog, the owner suddenly appeared to claim him.

It was a stark reminder of the thin line rescuers walk. While the dog appeared under-socialized and fearful, Randy recognized the importance of community outreach. “I’ll connect with him later by giving them free things,” Randy noted, acknowledging that in high-crime areas, the mission requires as much diplomacy as it does courage.

A Lifetime of Dedication

For Randy Grim and his team member Donna, the work never stops. Whether it’s navigating the different worlds of North City and the East Side or dealing with the heartbreak of finding dogs too late, their guiding principle remains the same.

Every life has value: Even a septic, “leaking” dog deserves a $2,700 night of care.

Persistence pays off: Rescuing Momma took five months of trying, proving that GWARP never gives up.

Community is key: Connecting with owners in difficult areas is the only way to create long-term change.

Momma is now on her way to the adoption program, leaving the trauma of the streets behind. The urban jungle may be tough, but as long as Randy Grim is on the route, there is always hope for the dogs of St. Louis.
