Just hours into the holiday, a devastating call halted all celebrations for the dedicated rescue team at Stray Rescue of St. Louis (SRSL). The local police had made a heartbreaking discovery. They found a gray-and-white pit bull standing completely alone in the middle of the street, covered in evidence of a horrific attack.
He was severely injured. He was terrified.
And yet, despite enduring a level of trauma that would have broken the spirit of most, this incredible dog was still standing. He was refusing to give up on a life that had, until that moment, shown him so little kindness and compassion.

A Heartbreaking Discovery in the Dead of Night
The responding officers didn’t hesitate for a single second. Recognizing the sheer urgency of the situation, they carefully scooped up the terrified, wounded dog—who would later be named Wallace—and rushed him straight to the SRSL animal hospital.
“This is not at all how we wanted to ring in the New Year,” the rescue organization shared with their supporters online, their hearts heavy with grief for the innocent animal.
The skilled veterinary team immediately sprang into action the moment Wallace arrived. They placed the sweet boy under anesthesia to safely and thoroughly assess the true extent of his injuries. What they discovered during the examination confirmed their absolute worst fears.
Wallace had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
It was nothing short of a miracle that he had survived the ordeal at all. The rescuers were entirely heartbroken thinking about the pain he had been forced to endure all alone in the dark. Exactly 48 hours after his harrowing arrival, Wallace emerged victorious from a successful surgery. Once he was feeling strong enough to stand comfortably, he received a warm, soothing bath—washing away the physical dirt and the painful memories of his past, preparing him for a much brighter future.
The Reunion That Left Everyone in Tears
On January 5, just four days after his dramatic rescue, Wallace woke up to the absolute best surprise imaginable.
Officer Ottengheime and Officer Stevens—the very same compassionate police officers who had found him shivering and wounded on the street—walked right through the shelter doors. They hadn’t forgotten about the brave dog they saved; they had returned specifically to give him a follow-up hug and check on his progress.
The moment Wallace laid eyes on his heroes, he completely lost his composure.
Any lingering pain or fear seemingly vanished into thin air, instantly replaced by an overwhelming wave of pure, unfiltered joy. He practically melted into the officers’ arms, his tail wagging with unstoppable, frantic force.
“He gave them each about 1 million grateful kisses and thanked them for saving him and bringing him here, to Stray Rescue,” SRSL shared, deeply moved by the beautiful scene. “Our hearts absolutely exploded!”
It was a reunion that left absolutely no dry eye in the entire room, proving that dogs never forget the people who show them kindness when they need it most.
A Promise of Forever
Wallace’s incredible story of survival, resilience, and boundless forgiveness spread like wildfire throughout the local community. It didn’t take long for a loving couple to hear his story, see his sweet face, and realize instantly that he belonged with them.
Less than ten days after he arrived broken and bleeding, his future family walked into the rescue center to meet him.
Although Wallace still needed some extra time resting at the shelter to fully heal from his extensive injuries, his new parents promised they would wait as long as it took. They visited him frequently, building a deep bond that would surely last a lifetime. During one of those magical visits, the resilient dog couldn’t help but crawl straight into their laps.
