Starting a normal workday usually involves brewing coffee and checking emails.
But for one employee arriving at J. Rieger & Co., a popular distillery located in Kansas City, Missouri, an early March morning brought a completely unimaginable discovery. When they looked up, they didn’t just see the sky.
They saw a dog.
He was stranded on the roof of the commercial building, looking down with exhausted, pleading eyes. The immediate question on everyone’s mind was how a dog could possibly get up there. There were no stairs, no easy access points, and no logical explanation.
Determined to solve the mystery, the distillery team rushed to check their overnight security footage.
What they saw on the screen made their blood run cold. At exactly 1:24 a.m., under the cover of darkness, the cameras captured the horrific truth. The dog hadn’t climbed up.
He had literally fallen from the sky.

Surviving an Unimaginable Plunge
The footage was both terrifying and miraculous to watch.
The pup plummeted from above, but by an absolute stroke of luck, he didn’t hit the unforgiving concrete. Instead, he crash-landed directly onto one of the thick outdoor tents set up on the distillery’s roof. The canvas broke his fall, saving his life in the blink of an eye.
After bouncing off the tent, the bewildered dog wandered around the roof for a few moments in the dark.
Kansas City was experiencing severe weather that night, with plunging temperatures and harsh conditions. Realizing he was trapped, the smart pup sought out the only shelter he could find. He curled up tightly into a small ball in a corner, tucking himself underneath an AC unit to block the wind.
He waited in the freezing dark for hours, hoping someone would eventually come.
Piecing Together a Cruel Mystery
The staff at J. Rieger & Co. were absolutely completely stunned, but they didn’t hesitate to act.
This particular distillery prides itself on being an incredibly dog-friendly space. In fact, they regularly support local animal rescue initiatives, and the cofounder’s own rescue dog, a sweet pup named Pepper, serves as the unofficial mascot of the company.
Knowing exactly who to call, the staff immediately contacted the experts at KC Pet Project.
When the rescue team arrived, they carefully brought the frightened dog down to safety. Together with the employees, they analyzed the footage and the surrounding area.
Lucy Rieger, the brand director at the distillery, shared the heartbreaking leading theory. Based on the video evidence and the geographical layout, the experts believe the dog was intentionally thrown from a nearby bridge in the middle of the night.
A Perfect Ending for a Lucky Survivor
Despite the unimaginable cruelty he faced, the dog’s spirit was never broken.
When the rescuers finally reached him on the roof, he didn’t bite or run. He was eager to accept their help, leaning into their hands with pure gratitude. The team appropriately named him Rieger in honor of his miraculous landing spot.
Miraculously, a thorough veterinary check revealed that Rieger was completely unharmed. He was shaken, but his body was perfectly intact.
Rieger was quickly transferred into the dedicated care of KC Pet Project, and his story didn’t end in a shelter kennel. It didn’t take long for his incredible tale of survival to capture hearts. Within days, he was officially adopted into a loving, forever home.
While Rieger didn’t get the chance to meet Pepper the mascot that weekend, the distillery team holds out hope. They are crossing their fingers that his new family will bring him back to visit the very place where his life began again.
