It was raining heavily when we received the emergency call.
A wet mother dog was kneeling by the side of the road, trembling from the biting cold and agonizing pain. She couldn’t walk. Her back legs were completely paralyzed, the skin scraped red and raw from dragging her heavy body across the rough pavement.
Yet, she wasn’t trying to find shelter for herself.
Instead, she remained exposed to the elements, looking at every passing car with desperate, pleading eyes. Her udders were full of milk. She wasn’t begging for her own life—she was asking someone, anyone, to stop and help her babies.

A Desperate Search in the Cold
We knew immediately that time was running out.
If a paralyzed mother was willing to drag herself to a busy, dangerous road, her puppies were in severe peril. We began searching the surrounding area, calling out and listening closely through the sound of the rain.
After an agonizing hour, we finally found them.
Hidden deep inside a nearby bush were four tiny puppies, crying uncontrollably from hunger and the freezing temperatures. We carefully gathered them up into our coats. If they had stayed in that cold rain for even one more day, their fragile bodies would not have survived.
The Worst Injury Imaginable
At the veterinary clinic, the true extent of the mother’s sacrifice became clear.
We named her Indra. After safely bathing and drying her, she kept bowing her head toward us, offering a look of gratitude through the saddest eyes we had ever seen.
Then came the X-rays, revealing a devastating reality.

Indra’s spine was broken completely in half. It was the absolute worst injury the attending veterinarian had ever seen. The fact that she had dragged herself to the road with a shattered spine just to get help for her puppies was nothing short of miraculous. While her four babies were placed under heat lamps and carefully fed, Indra had to prepare for a grueling medical journey.
Healing and a Heartwarming Reunion
Indra required two incredibly difficult spinal surgeries.
The doctors warned us that the procedures would only relieve her pain and stabilize her back; she would remain paralyzed from the waist down for the rest of her life. During her recovery, Indra was constantly anxious, missing her babies terribly, especially when night fell.
When it was finally safe, we brought one of her puppies in for a short visit.
The brave mother immediately tried to sit up to greet her little one, her maternal instincts completely overpowering her surgical pain.
Rolling Into a Bright Future
To give Indra the life she deserved, we ordered a custom canine wheelchair all the way from Canada.

At first, the new device terrified her. She stood frozen, unsure of how to move her body with this strange metal contraption attached to her. But with gentle encouragement and time, she took her first tentative step.
Soon, she was gliding effortlessly.
The wheels became her new legs, carrying her to explore new lands and run freely once again. Today, Indra and her four beautiful puppies—Emi, Emily, Daisy, and Dani—are safe. They share endless joy together every single day while we search for the perfect, loving forever homes for the little ones.
