A Starving Mama Dog Gave Everything to Save Her Last Puppy—Then Found a Hilarious Way to Enjoy Retirement

Some rescues don’t start with wagging tails and grateful kisses. They start with paralyzing fear.

When a pregnant dog named Nala was taken in by a kind woman named Ilima, she was a broken spirit. Her breathing was ragged. Her body, severely undernourished, was preparing to give birth at any moment.

The trauma of her past had taught her to remain invisible.

For the first few days, Nala refused to step out of her safe space. She wouldn’t leave her bed. To get her into the sunlight, Ilima had to slide her entire pen out of the garage, speaking softly and offering high-value treats just to coax her into taking a single step outside.

Every movement was a massive victory.

But love, when given patiently, always finds a way in.

The Cruel Cost of Neglect

Trust takes time, but when it arrives, it is unmistakable.

After a little over a week of gentle care, Nala approached Ilima as she sat on the couch. The exhausted dog rested her heavy head on Ilima’s lap, looking up with eyes that finally asked for help.

Soon after, the real struggle began.

Nala gave birth to a massive litter of ten puppies. But the celebration was cut painfully short. The long-term effects of Nala’s starvation meant her body was failing her babies. Despite everyone’s desperate efforts, nine of the puppies did not survive.

The grief was heavy, but there was no time to give up.

There was one survivor. A tiny, fierce puppy named Mufasa. Nala channeled all her maternal instincts, all her warmth, and all her remaining energy into keeping that one little boy alive.

And against all odds, he thrived.

Learning How to Rest

Mufasa grew into a wild, happy firecracker of a dog.

When he was old enough, Ilima found a wonderful family for him to join. While some mothers might have panicked, Nala seemed to understand that the hard part was finally over.

She looked at her mom, let out a metaphorical breath, and decided she was officially off the clock.

With her puppy safe, Nala’s true personality finally blossomed. The dog who was once too terrified to walk on grass suddenly became the most relaxed, quirky creature in the house.

She discovered the magic of television.

Nala became completely obsessed with watching novelas on the big screen, often sitting so close that Ilima had to scold her like a teenager. But her relationship with technology didn’t stop there.

The Nose-Scrolling Matriarch

When introduced to iPads and iPhones, Nala realized the screens reacted to touch.

Soon, she developed a trick that left her family in stitches. Whenever a video was playing on the phone that didn’t capture her interest, Nala would lean forward, press her nose against the glass, and swipe to skip it.

She had become a tech critic.

Watching this confident, funny dog scroll through videos, Ilima realized something profound. Nala wasn’t a foster dog anymore. She was exactly where she belonged.

Nala perfectly leveled out the energy of Ilima’s other dogs. She naturally stepped into the role of the calm, wise older sister who kept an eye on the pack while thoroughly enjoying her “hot mom summer.”

She endured the darkest days imaginable. But today, she rests in paradise.
