When a dog is completely stripped of food, water, and shelter, their body slowly begins to shut down.

But even when the physical body gives up, sometimes the spirit refuses to let go.

Deep in the rural outskirts of Ierapetra, Crete, hidden under a tangle of dry bushes, a fragile blonde dog was quietly waiting for the end. She had been wandering alone for months. By the time anyone noticed her, she was nothing more than a skeleton wrapped in fur.

She had no energy to run. She had no strength to react. She had completely surrendered to her tragic fate.

But destiny had a very different plan for her.

A Faint Spark in the Shadows

In mid-October 2022, veteran animal rescuer Takis, founder of Takis Shelter, received an urgent call from three concerned Good Samaritans. They had spotted the emaciated dog in the “middle of nowhere.”

When Takis arrived at the desolate location, the sight took his breath away.

“If we didn’t find her today, one, two days more, she will not be alive anymore,” he realized. The poor girl was entirely depleted. Knowing that stray dogs are often terrified of humans, Takis crouched down slowly, offering her a savory treat.

To his amazement, the sweet, docile dog simply extended her neck and gently accepted the food. She didn’t have the power to bite or flee. She just wanted comfort.

That night, Nala slept deeply on a soft, warm bed for the first time in her life. But the real battle was just beginning.

The next morning, Takis rushed her to the veterinary clinic for a full evaluation. The medical team uncovered a horrifying reality: Nala’s body was actively shutting down from the inside.

She was diagnosed with pyometra, a severe and potentially fatal infection of the uterus. Furthermore, she was suffering from untreated diabetes. Her blood sugar levels had skyrocketed to a deadly 600, far above the normal range of 70 to 170.

Her internal organs were severely damaged. To save her life, she required an immediate, high-risk emergency surgery.

Looking at her skeleton-like frame, Takis and the veterinarians feared she wouldn’t survive the anesthesia. But Nala was a warrior. She bravely endured the grueling four-hour operation without a single hitch.

She woke up, ready to fight for her second chance.

The Sweet Taste of Recovery

Healing Nala required intense dedication.

Because of her severe diabetes, she couldn’t simply be fed large meals to gain weight. She was placed on a strict, specialized diet and required regular insulin shots to bring her blood sugar down to a healthy 120.

For the first few weeks, survival instincts dominated her mind. She would fiercely protect her food bowl, terrified that she might starve again. But as the days turned into weeks, the trauma began to wash away.

She realized the meals would never stop coming.

Soon, the sad, exhausted dog who couldn’t even lift her head began to show signs of life. Her tail started to give a happy wag. She found her voice. She even started playfully teasing the other rescue dogs, practically begging them to run around with her.

From the Bushes to Royalty

Fast forward three years, and Nala’s transformation is nothing short of breathtaking.

The dog who was once left to die in the dirt is now living like absolute royalty. “Now she is a princess in the house with her own bedroom, and she is very strong and happy!” Takis shared proudly.

She bounds around her own massive play area, eagerly greeting every single visitor who stops by the shelter.
