Sometimes, the universe steps in and changes your plans for a reason.
When Matt and Grace set out for a family hike in Bella Vista, Arkansas, they had a specific trail in mind. They packed up their baby, leashed up their two dogs, Foxi and Nemo, and headed out for a peaceful day in nature.
But at the very last minute, something came up.
They made a split-second decision to pivot and take an entirely different path than they had originally planned. They had no idea that this simple change in direction was about to save a life.
As they made their way down the unfamiliar dirt trail, a heartbreaking sight appeared in the distance. An animal was wandering through the wilderness, completely alone.

A Desperate Plea for Help
As the couple cautiously approached, they realized the solitary figure was a dog.
She wasn’t a wild animal or a confident stray. She was an exhausted senior pup who looked entirely out of place in the vast woods. Matt gently stepped forward to investigate, unsure if she would run away in fear.
But she didn’t run.
Instead, the sweet older dog immediately trotted over to meet him. Her eyes held a mixture of exhaustion and profound relief. She was incredibly friendly and practically begging for someone to help her find her way out of the wilderness.
Matt didn’t hesitate. He bent down and gently scooped the senior dog into his arms.
She didn’t object at all. She simply melted into his embrace, trusting this stranger completely. Matt carried his new friend back to Grace, the baby, and their dogs, and the group continued down the trail with an unexpected new member in tow.
A Peaceful Rest in the Shade
Knowing the older dog was tired and likely dehydrated, the family hiked over to a nearby park to find some thick shade.
They sat down in the cool grass to assess the situation and figure out their next steps. The lost pup was remarkably calm and sweet, acting as if she had been desperately looking for a nice family to guide her back home.
She fit right in. The couple’s own two dogs, Foxi and Nemo, instinctively understood she needed help. They calmly chilled in the grass right beside her, offering silent canine support.
Because Matt and Grace had experience rescuing dogs before, they knew exactly who to call. They reached out to the Bella Vista Animal Shelter, who immediately dispatched a team to collect the wandering pup.
The Power of a Split-Second Decision
The family said a bittersweet goodbye as she was loaded into the shelter’s vehicle, crossing their fingers that she had a family looking for her.
Thankfully, she did.
The shelter quickly posted her photo on their Facebook page, revealing her name: Lola. Just a few days earlier, during a routine evening walk, Lola had accidentally slipped away from her family. They had been searching everywhere, sick with worry over their senior girl.
When Lola’s mom saw the Facebook post, the nightmare finally ended.
Thanks to Matt and Grace’s sudden change of plans, Lola is now safe and sound in her own bed. Had they taken their original trail, Lola’s story could have ended in tragedy. Sometimes, we don’t choose the path we walk—the path chooses us.
