Kicked by a Worker and Abandoned for Being “Broken,” This Tiny Puppy Fought to Survive Against All Odds

He was lying on the cold pavement, twitching uncontrollably.

To the busy pedestrians rushing by, he was just an unpleasant sight. To the sanitation worker who kicked him aside, he was just trash blocking the road.

But he wasn’t trash. He was a baby. Born with a head that was too soft and a brain that was under immense pressure, he had been abandoned by his mother and rejected by the world.

He was no bigger than the palm of my hand. When I picked him up, he was trembling. He didn’t whine in pain; he let out a strange, neurological cry—a sound of confusion and distress from a brain that wasn’t working right.

I wrapped him in a blanket and promised him: “You are not broken. You are just beginning.”

A Diagnosis That Would Scare Anyone

At the hospital, the doctors were grim.

The little puppy, whom we named Qi Zai (Little Miracle), was fighting a massive battle. He had hydrocephalus (water on the brain), congenital defects, and his skull hadn’t fully closed. The pressure inside his tiny head was causing the seizures.

He needed surgery. Immediately. But he was so small—weighing less than 1.4 pounds. The risk was enormous.

We waited outside the operating room, holding our breath. And then, the news came. He made it.

The Coolest Patient in the Ward

The days following the surgery were a roller coaster. Qi Zai spent his time in the ICU, fighting through the critical period. But as the days passed, a personality began to emerge from the bandages.

He wasn’t just a victim; he was a fighter. And a stylish one at that.

To help his brain recover and relieve pain, Qi Zai had to undergo daily laser therapy. The doctors put a pair of tiny, custom-made protective sunglasses on him.

Most dogs shake their heads or fight the glasses. Not Qi Zai. He lay there perfectly still, looking like the coolest, toughest little dog in the world, letting the laser do its work. He seemed to know that these humans were trying to save him.

From “Starving Runt” to “Picky Foodie”

As the pain subsided, the hunger arrived.

Qi Zai discovered the joy of food. At first, he needed to be syringe-fed. But soon, he developed a taste for the finer things in life. Dry kibble? No, thank you. He would keep his mouth shut tight.

But bring out the chicken puree or the salmon? His eyes would light up, and he would devour it until his belly was round and full.

He gained weight, growing from a fragile skeleton into a fluffy, white ball of energy. The nurses couldn’t resist him. Every time he let out a little spoil-me whine, someone would rush over to cuddle him.

Learning to Stand on Wobbly Legs

The road to recovery is long. Because of the compression on his cerebellum, Qi Zai’s front legs struggle to support him. He isn’t walking perfectly yet, but he refuses to give up.

He undergoes acupuncture. He does hyperbaric oxygen therapy. He pushes himself up, his front paws scratching at the bed sheets, trying to find his balance.

Recently, during a session, his front legs held his weight for the first time. It was a small moment, but for us, it was a mountain moved.

Qi Zai was born unwanted. He was kicked when he was down. But today, he is the most loved dog in the hospital.

He has a long 6-month rehab journey ahead to learn to walk, but with his “cool” sunglasses and his full belly, we know one thing for sure:

Qi Zai isn’t going anywhere. He’s here to stay.
