There is a specific kind of sadness that only a rainy day can bring, especially when that rain falls on a soul that has nowhere to go.
Deep inside a small, forgotten alley, a tiny shape was huddled against the cold, damp wall. This was Nikki. She wasn’t more than a few months old, but the weight of the world had already crushed her spirit. She had been there for days—ignored by some, unseen by others—while the rain soaked into her fur and the chill settled deep into her bones.
When we first found her, she didn’t try to run. She didn’t have the strength. Nikki shrank back, her small body trembling as she tried to keep herself from collapsing. It was clear that she was injured, but more than that, she was broken.
Who could have left a child like this here? Was she thrown away after suffering at the hands of someone cruel? A thousand questions filled our minds, but as we looked at her heavy, labored breathing, only one thing mattered: saving her life.

A Race Against Time and Silence
The body of a puppy is far too small to endure such immense misfortune. As we lifted Nikki, we realized just how dire her situation was. She was severely anemic, her gums pale, and her tiny frame dangerously dehydrated.

The drive to the vet was filled with a heavy, suffocating silence, broken only by the occasional, weak moan from Nikki. She lay completely motionless in the back of the car, her breaths so shallow that we had to keep checking if she was still with us.
“Only God can help this baby now,” we whispered.
At the clinic, the doctors rushed her inside. We waited in the hallway, the seconds feeling like hours. We weren’t just waiting for test results; we were waiting for a sign that Nikki hadn’t given up. Every prayer we knew was sent to that little angel behind the clinic doors.
The First Signs of a Fighting Spirit
The first few days were a blur of IV fluids, careful monitoring, and a lot of hope. Nikki remained very weak, unable to even lift her head, let alone stand on her frail legs. She was being looked after with the utmost care, but the trauma she had endured was deep.
Then, on the third day, a small miracle happened.
Nikki opened her eyes and they looked… brighter. She managed to push herself up, just an inch or two, and drank a little bit of milk. It wasn’t much, but it was everything. It was the moment we knew that the little girl from the alley was a fighter.
Once she was stable enough, Nikki was allowed to leave the clinic and go to Omid Fereshtegan’s house. For the first time in her short life, she didn’t have to sleep on cold concrete or damp dirt. She was tucked into a soft, warm bed.
The change in her demeanor was instantaneous. She turned out to be incredibly friendly and affectionate, as if she had been waiting her whole life just to be loved.

A Beautiful Transformation at the Shelter
Recovery isn’t just about medicine; it’s about the soul. At the house, Nikki found many friends. Being surrounded by other dogs who had also survived hardships seemed to relax her. She realized she was no longer alone.
By the time she fully recovered and was brought back to the animal shelter, the Nikki we saw was not the same puppy we found in the rain.
The “walking skeleton” was gone. In her place was a beautiful, healthy dog who had gained weight and found her voice. She wasn’t shrinking back anymore; she was running forward to greet everyone with a wagging tail.
Nikki is now one of the happiest residents at the shelter. Her fur is soft, her eyes are full of life, and her spirit is unbreakable. She spends her days playing and waiting—waiting for the final piece of her puzzle: a wonderful, forever home.
Nikki’s story is a reminder that even in the darkest, coldest alleys, hope can be found. It takes just one person to stop, one person to care, and one miracle to turn a tragedy into a beautiful new beginning.
Thank you to everyone who supported Nikki. Because of you, she will never have to be cold again.
