Nina’s journey began as a cruelty confiscation case.

When Memphis Animal Services safely removed her from her previous environment, they knew immediately that her condition required specialized intervention. They reached out to their transport partners at RightWay Rescue, who took one look at the sweet Pitbull terrier mix and knew that turning their backs on her was simply not an option.

When Nina arrived at the Admissions and Medical Services campus, the extent of her suffering was heartbreaking to witness.

Hanging from her abdomen were two tumors—one massive growth and a second smaller one. They had been left untreated for a very long time.

Beyond the tumors, she was incredibly underweight. Her bones pressed sharply against her skin, and her back legs were raw from a severe skin infection.

The veterinary team discovered that the tumors were highly vascularized. Because she was so malnourished and weak, rushing her into the operating room carried a terrifying risk of severe blood loss. Her tired body simply couldn’t handle the shock of the procedure.

Surgery was not an immediate option. First, they had to teach her body how to survive.

Nina was placed on a careful regimen of painkillers, anti-inflammatory medications, and antibiotics. Her medical team set a singular goal: build up her weight and strength until she was ready to fight.
