A Two-Day Wait Among the Trees

In October of last year, Priscilla Wolcott, a dedicated animal control officer with Fresno Humane Animal Services, received an urgent call. A kind-hearted orchard worker reported a heartbreaking sight: a mother dog and her three puppies had been dumped out among the trees.

Because the agricultural site was so incredibly remote, it took Wolcott two full days to reach the location.

During that critical waiting period, the compassionate workers stepped up. They took time out of their grueling shifts to ensure the abandoned family had enough food and fresh water to survive the isolation.

“There’s no one living out there,” Wolcott explained. The dogs’ survival depended entirely on the kindness of the people working the land.

A Staggering Headcount in the Shadows

When Wolcott finally stepped out of her truck, she immediately spotted the mama and three babies she had been dispatched to save.

But as she looked deeper into the heavy brush of the orchard trees, her jaw dropped.

Hidden in the foliage was a second adult mother dog nursing her very own litter of tiny, newborn puppies. The workers explained that this second family had been buried so deep in the trees they hadn’t seen them during the initial call. As Wolcott processed the sheer magnitude of the situation, the abandoned pack did something completely unexpected. Instead of cowering in fear, the dogs happily rushed up to her, furiously wagging their tails and gently licking her hands. They knew they were finally safe.

Breaking the Rules for Love

The seasoned officer was officially faced with a logistical nightmare. Her rescue truck was simply not equipped to transport thirteen animals at once.

But leaving even a single dog behind in the dirt was completely out of the question.

Determined to keep the massive, blended family safe, Wolcott decided to bend the rules. She carefully secured the mothers and puppies in the main transport area, and then ushered the remaining adult dog right into the cab of her truck.

“We don’t typically put the animals in our back seats, for safety reasons,” Wolcott admitted. “But I was like, ‘I’m not gonna leave one of them out here. We’re gonna make it work either way.’”

Thirteen Beautiful Happy Endings

Miraculously, despite being dumped in the middle of nowhere, all thirteen dogs were found to be in excellent health.

The two brave mothers and their ten beautiful puppies were safely transferred to Ruff Day Rescue, where the babies were given a warm, safe environment to grow big and strong. The third adult dog, a sweet girl named Hope, remained under the expert care of Fresno Humane Animal Services.

Unsurprisingly, it didn’t take long for every single one of these affectionate, trusting dogs to find their perfect forever families.
