Sometimes, a photo is enough to tell a whole story of cruelty.
On November 6th, 2020, the police in Jetiba, Brazil, received a complaint accompanied by a picture of a mother dog and her puppies. But when rescuers arrived at the scene, the reality was even more heartbreaking. There were no puppies to be found. Instead, there was just a large, shivering female dog left alone in a filthy backyard.
She had no food, no water, and it was obvious she had just given birth. When asked where the babies were, the owner coldly admitted he had already sold them for profit. He was arrested on the spot, but the damage to the mother dog was already deep.

A Soul Heavy with Sadness
We named her Aisha. Beyond the hunger and the dirt, we quickly discovered that Aisha was suffering from something much worse: craniocerebral trauma.
She was in constant pain, unable to stand up, and struggled even to swallow her food. But the physical trauma was only half the battle. Aisha was deeply depressed, her eyes searching for the babies that had been taken away too soon.
To help her cope with the loneliness, we gave her a stuffed toy. She clung to it as if it were one of her pups, and it was the only thing that seemed to calm her down during those long, difficult nights.

The Long Road to Standing Up
Aisha’s recovery was a slow, grueling process. She had to undergo daily medical treatments and eventually started physical therapy and acupuncture.
Two months into her stay at our center, she had gained 5kg and was looking much healthier, but she still couldn’t walk on her own. She was still dependent on us for everything—from being fed to being helped when she needed to go outside.

We knew it was going to be a long journey, but we refused to give up on her. We kept pushing with weekly walking training sessions, hoping her back legs would eventually remember what to do.
Three Steps Toward a Miracle
Aisha’s story eventually went viral, and the outpouring of love was incredible. Someone even donated a custom wheelchair to help her get mobile again.
The new tool gave her a massive boost of confidence. During one of her last therapy sessions, something amazing happened. After five months of hard work, Aisha took three steps all by herself—without the wheelchair, and without anyone holding her up.
It was only three steps, but to us, it felt like she had just climbed a mountain.
Five Months Later
Today, five months after she was found shivering in that backyard, Aisha is a different dog. She is no longer just a “puppy machine” to be used for profit; she is a survivor who is loved for exactly who she is.

Aisha’s journey reminds us that:
- The scars we can’t see (like a broken heart) take the longest to heal.
- A simple toy or a kind word can be the first step toward recovery.
- Persistence and love can eventually make the “impossible” possible.
Aisha still has a way to go, but she is finally moving forward. She isn’t looking back at that backyard anymore—she’s looking at a future where she will never be abandoned again.
