When you are suddenly abandoned by the only family you’ve ever known, the world instantly becomes a massive, terrifying place.
For two dogs dumped on the streets of Georgia, safety was nowhere to be found. Unsure of where to go or who to trust, they searched for any place that could shield them from the outside world. They ended up settling for the only shelter they could find: a dark, narrow drainage pipe.
It wasn’t a home. It was just a place to hide.

The Struggle to Break Through the Fear
When rescuer Audray Luck first arrived at the pipe, she immediately saw the depth of their trauma.
These two dogs hadn’t experienced much human kindness in their lives. They were painfully skittish, their bodies trembling at the slightest sudden movement. Hunger forced them to creep close enough to snatch small bites of food straight from Audray’s hands, but the fear was always stronger than the hunger.
The moment she reached out to gently pet them or tried to slip a leash over their heads, they scrambled backward in pure panic.
She knew right then that forcing them wasn’t an option. She had to outsmart their fear.

A Long Shot That Changed Everything
Catching them was going to require a brilliant strategy.
The next morning, Audray returned to the pipe with a fresh plan. She carefully placed a large, open wire crate on the ground and tossed delicious, high-value food all the way to the back of it.
It felt like a massive long shot. Would they actually step inside?
Audray backed away and held her breath. Slowly, the hungry pups crept out of their concrete fortress and moved toward the crate. Step by cautious step, they walked inside to reach the food. In a split second, the door was shut securely behind them.
The plan had miraculously worked. They were finally safe, even if they were still too terrified to realize it.

Learning That Hands Can Be Gentle
The physical rescue was over, but the emotional rescue had just begun.
Even safely indoors, the pups—now named Mimi and Momo—remained deeply fearful of their new surroundings. But Audray refused to give up. “All I wanted to do was give them love,” she explained, “so I kept trying.”
After a few crucial days of decompressing in a quiet space, Mimi and Momo were transferred to an incredible foster mom who specialized in rehabilitating severely neglected dogs.

Under her patient care, the thick walls around their hearts finally began to crumble. They were fully vetted, thoroughly groomed, and slowly taught that human hands are meant for petting, not hurting.
Today, the dark, dirty drainpipe is nothing but a distant memory.
Mimi and Momo blossomed into beautifully confident dogs. They realized that people aren’t so scary after all, and both pups were quickly adopted into loving forever homes where they are absolutely thriving. Their journey proves that no matter how deep the trauma or how dark the hiding place, patience and love will always find a way in.
