Sometimes, nature deals a hand that seems impossible to play.
When Sasha was born, she didn’t look like the other puppies in her litter. She was tiny, chétive, and carried the weight of a dozen different struggles before she had even taken her first breath. To the outside world, she was “non-viable”—a life that was expected to flicker out as quickly as it had begun.
She was born with a cleft lip and palate, making it impossible for her to nurse. But that was only the beginning of her “bad cards.”
Medical exams soon revealed a heartbreaking list: hydrocephalus (fluid on the brain), a respiratory infection, a urinary tract infection, and orthopedic issues. Most people looked at Sasha and saw a tragedy.
But Marie DeMarco looked at her and saw a fighter.

The Nurse Who Chose to Believe
Marie is a nurse practitioner—someone who spends her life fighting for others. Usually, she focused her rescue efforts on fragile kittens, but when she met the tiny Pitbull pup, she knew this was a soul that couldn’t be ignored.
Sasha didn’t know she was “supposed” to give up. She didn’t know her medical chart was a list of reasons why she shouldn’t be here.
Every day was a battle. Because of her cleft palate, feeding was a delicate, dangerous process. Every breath was a victory. Every morning she woke up was a miracle that defied the odds.
“She has an amazing will and determination,” Marie observed. “Through all this, she really shouldn’t be here.”
But Sasha was here. And she had no intention of leaving.

Finding Color in the Gray
As the weeks passed, the puppy that was “never meant to survive” began to do something extraordinary: She began to thrive.
Under Marie’s tireless care, Sasha’s world transformed from a medical struggle into a life full of love and personality. To keep her warm and protect her fragile body, she started wearing an array of tiny sweaters and colorful dresses.

She wasn’t just a patient anymore; she was a fashion icon of resilience.
The physical changes were undeniable:
- She began to put on weight, rounding out her once-fragile frame.
- Her infections cleared, and her breathing became steady.
- Most importantly, her spirit began to shine through.
When Marie holds her now, Sasha doesn’t shy away. If Marie brings her close, Sasha reaches out to lick her nose—a tiny, wet “thank you” for the person who refused to let her go.
A Journey Measured in Nose Licks
Today, Sasha is over three months old. In the world of medical predictions, she is a living impossibility.
Her road isn’t perfect. Her hydrocephalus and orthopedic issues mean her future will always require extra care and attention. But if you watch her pose for photos or see the spark in her eyes, you realize that “viability” isn’t measured by a doctor’s chart.

It’s measured by the heart.
Sasha’s story stands as a beautiful reminder to us all:
- No life is too small to fight for.
- Love can often see what medicine misses.
- Determination is a force that can bridge the gap between “hopeless” and “healing.”
Sasha was dealt some of the hardest cards life can offer, but she is winning the game anyway. She continues to grow stronger every day, proving that when you combine a puppy’s will to live with a human’s refusal to give up, miracles don’t just happen—they stay.
